Richard Madely is fantastic.

Everybody watching Richard & Judy does so just to see them fuck up. Every missed cue, fluffed link and bicker is a televisual delight. It's a live video valium feed which fills you up with as much current affairs as it's safe for you to know about, suggests some uncontroversial literature and debased TV to help you pass the time and sends you away feeling really good about yourself. It's there to stop people who've left the ofice at 4:30 because they can't be fucked any more from committing suicide or bringing down the government. It's just impossible to disagree with such endearingly hopeless chirpy people. Turning it on is like having instant friends and fun without ever having to make an effort.

Eigty years ago all the ordinary idiots, losers and wastrels got put in the army (or the gutter) and used to control the darkies out in the empire. Nowadays they're subjected to a continuous stream of banality until they're so placid they can easily be manipulated into voting for the right people. I bet the production team all work for MI5.
